SWE

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE), founded in 1950 is a national non-profit professional organization dedicated to the advancement of women in the engineering profession with membership in the thousands. The society is made up of senior sections (practicing engineers) and student sections. There are approximately 300 student sections in the United States, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. The sections are divided amongst ten regions throughout North America. Our student section here at UND is in the Heartland Region. Students will find that UND-SWE has strong programs designed to meet the goals and objectives of the national organization, as well as their own specific goals.

Once a month, meetings are held to conduct section business and to solicit ideas/guidance from members. Meetings are usually held in Harrington Hall, Room 218 at 6:00PM. Members are notified and signs are posted around campus prior to the meeting. By participating in these meetings, students have the opportunity to get to know each other, to provide input into the activities of the section, and to become involved in UND-SWE's activities.

Outreach has been an integral part of the UND-SWE section since its chartering. Activities designed to encourage and to inform elementary, middle, and high school students of the various engineering disciplines are a top priority for the section. Outreach benefits the students, their parents, and teachers as our members develop and improve their organizational and presentation skills. Outreach stimulates enthusiasm, pride, and personal development in all involved.

At the end of each semester, UND-SWE holds special events to honor its members. At these events, members, parents, faculty, staff, and guests celebrate the accomplishments of the section and its members. It is a time to give special recognition to graduating seniors, to review the year and to acknowledge the contributions of the membership. At the spring luncheon, awards and scholarship are announced.

The annual Regional SWE Student Conference and the National Student Conference provide wonderful opportunities to meet students from the region and across the nation. The Regional Conference is held in the spring of each year. UND-SWE had the honor of hosting the Heartland Regional Conference in 1986 and 1996. The National Student Conference is held in October each year. At these events, sections hold regional meetings to conduct the business of the society, including the selection of the site for the next year's Regional Conference. The conference program includes many technical and professional development sessions and include a large scale career fair geared towards engineers.

The Society of Women Engineers sponsors an annual technical paper competition at two levels. The first level is the submission of a written paper and the second level is an oral presentation. The paper, no longer than 10 pages, may center around a specific project or topic from a class, a design project, a summer technical or co-op assignment, or research. One student is selected from each of the ten regions to make an oral presentation at the National Conference. Regionally selected students receive airfare to the National Conference. Oral presentations are judged and the top three winners receive cash prizes. UND members have been both regional and national winners.
