One day, Karen “was walking back in after lunch and there was another Twamley employee trying to give directions to a grad student. This employee wasn’t sure where the student needed to go, so she asked Karen if she had any idea where she needed to be. And, yes, Karen did know, so she was trying to point her in the right direction. The student had her car parked out front and didn’t want to leave it, so Karen could point her in the right direction from the other side of Twamley. So, just like Karen, she told the student “Let’s just get into your car and I’ll show you”. They proceeded to find a parking space on the North Side of University Avenue. The student needed to go to McCannel Hall, so Karen walked with her to her destination and got her to where she needed to be to take a placement test, I believe. Many of us have given directions to students and other people who are on our campus, but how many actually get into their vehicles and personally get them to where they need to be? That is just the kind of person Karen is; always willing to help others by whatever means.”

As the central figure at the Office of International Programs, Tatjyana’s professionalism and personal touch impacts not only the staff of the International Centre, but more than 1,000 undergraduate and graduate international students, professors, research scholars, medical residents, professional staff, as well as more than 200 American students seeking to study abroad in foreign lands each year. She is always the first person to volunteer to assist with the numerous international gatherings at UND, including the coordination of a meeting place, purchase of food, preparation of the food, setting up of decorations, and the serving of food and drinks. This summer, Tatjyana accepted responsibilities as temporary International Student Advisor (in addition to her duties as the Office Manager) and she will continue in both positions until sometime in September 2009. She has also found time to serve on the hiring committee for the new Finance Associate for the International Centre and two new international Student Advisors. Tatjyana has a great attitude towards the mission of the International Centre-to build bridges between cultures and to support international education. Her smile, knowledge, and can-do demeanor goes a long way in assisting international students, faculty, and dependents at UND, as well as those American students that seek to study overseas. She is usually the first one to work and the last one to leave. She has made herself a key component in every section of the Office of International Programs. She truly deserves the U-Shine Award!”

One day last week, upon arrival at the program, a mother realized she had left her purse on her kitchen counter in Fargo, leaving her and her son without money to purchase Freshman Getting Started lunch tickets. Without hesitation, Cindy was willing to give this student and his mother money out of her own pocket to cover the expense. That truly was a U Shine moment! We appreciate all that Cindy does!”

So this woman is skipping along with walker, cast, etc. and missing some of the classes. The student had been so excited about this course because she just bought a brand new computer - then all these unfortunate events happened. Vicki called her and offered to go over to her house, work with her one-on-one and set up an e-mail account for her. Well, the student is absolutely "over the moon"! How cool is that? This generous offer to go the extra mile, not just for OLLI@UND, but for all the programs in the Division, is what makes Vicki and the entire IT unit shine.”

April 2009
U-Shine award winner is Janice Hoffarth

UND Staff Senate is proud to announce the April “U Shine Award” recipient Janice Hoffarth. Janice was nominated by Tammy Mulske and was presented with a check for $50 and a certificate by Human Resource Director, Diane Nelson on April 6th.

Here is an excerpt of what Tammy had to say about Janice:

“On February 9, the Music Department held its Open House. On the iciest day of the year, several students, prospective students, and faculty members were unable to attend the event. One of the absent faculty members was assigned to take the prospective students to lunch at Wilkerson Dining Center . When we were unable to find another faculty member to take the students to lunch, Janice immediately volunteered and then proceeded to lead the students, their parents, and some grandparents across the ice and snow to the Dining Center. To keep everyone safe, Janice found the icy patches for them, and fell twice in the process. She spent the next hour chatting with the students and promoting our university. After lunch, she led the students back to Hughes Fine Arts Center through the same ice and snow and rain. It was not until she was back in her office that she told anyone how wet and cold she was, and that she was sore from falling twice. The students only saw a cheerful person who loved the University she works for.

On a day when some people were unable to make it to work, and others were unwilling to take on additional duties for the Open House, Janice found the time, strength, and positive attitude to ensure that the visiting students had the best possible experience in some of the worst weather conditions.”

“Kristen is our front-line person. Prior to implementing Notifind, the campus conducted an experimental run of the emergency notification process that was in place at that time. Kristen had just recently started working as our secretary and had not done this task before. This involved contacting the entire campus building contact person list as quickly as possible. It was a rather tense exercise as it was being timed for effectiveness and all eyes were on her. She accomplished this task with great composure and professionalism.”

“A custodian was emptying a waste can and he heard a kind of unusual noise. A kind of noise paper shouldn't make. He looked in the container and discovered a bag of money. He immediately turned it in to our Supervisor who returned it to the office worker who accidentally tossed it. I think that's an incredibly honest thing to do and makes John a truly ‘U Shine' employee.”

December 2008

(email from Chester Fritz customer) “On Wednesday October 22, 2008 we visited your Auditorium to check out the parking facilities as we have tickets for the "Church Basement Ladies" production in November. On entering the building we approached the office where we met a lovely young lady who in addition to answering all our questions showed us where we would be sitting and explained all the positive attributes of the Auditorium. In addition to this she outlined some of the upcoming productions we might be interested in. She couldn't seem to do enough to make us feel welcome and answer any of our questions.

Every so often you get to meet a person who does her job so well that they are a credit to the organization they represent. Mary is one of them that should be recognized by her employer as a great asset to the organization. We thank her for her help and hope that you will congratulate her on a job well done.”

November 2008
The first U-Shine award winner is Paulette Lindquist.

UND Staff Senate is proud to announce the November “U Shine Award” recipient Paulette Lindquist. Paulette was nominated by Cheryl Widman and was presented with a check for $50 and a certificate by Staff Senate President Janice Hoffarth in her office on November 3rd.

Here is an excerpt of what Cheryl had to say about Paulette:

I don't know anyone who is more loyal and committed to UND than Paulette. She has almost 31 years (on Dec 19th) of employment at UND. Her commitment to her work and employees on campus shines" through every pay-period. She goes out of her way to be sure all of our hourly employees are paid accurately and on time, often spending a lot of time on the phone helping departments "sort things out" to ensure their employees are paid accurately. In my judgment, Paulette is most deserving of the
"U-Shine" Award because it's people like her, with her positive attitude, that make our campus what it is. So, this is my thanks to her. Thank you Paulette!!

All UND staff members are eligible to receive this award. Nominations can be submitted through the Staff Senate Website, http://www.und.edu/org/undss/ or forms are available at UND Facilities, Dining Services and the Memorial Union Post Office.
