Students
The University of North Dakota is concerned
about the academic success of students and the
safety of all members of the campus community.
We affirm that we will adhere to federal, state,
and local laws and by University policies and
regulations as outlined in Section 2 in the
Code of Student Life with respect to alcohol.
The consumption of alcohol by underage students
and the abuse and misuse of alcohol and related
high-risk behavior will not be tolerated.
Athletics
Because of the visibility and status held as
role models, student athletes are charged to
set the example of responsible and respectful
behavior. Athletic program personnel are expected
to include discussions of alcohol abuse, prevention,
and underage drinking among athletes as a part
of their training. In order to maintain active
status as student athletes, adherence to federal,
state, and local laws and the policies and regulations
of the Code of Student Life is expected.
Student Organizations
The University encourages all student organizations,
including fraternities and sororities, to be
alcohol-free. Organizations are expected to
conform to the standards outlined in the Code
of Student Life. Violation of these standards
will be addressed in accordance with the Code
of Student Life.
Residence Halls
Alcohol is not allowed in any of the University's
residence halls. Policies are outlined in the
Residence Hall Planner Handbook.
University Apartments
It is an expectation in apartment living that
residents and their guests who choose to consume
alcohol do so legally and responsibly.
Faculty and Staff
The University recognizes that alcohol consumption
is a serious problem among young adults. Many
come to the University unaware of the effects
of alcohol on their health, well-being, and
academic performance. It is, therefore, University
policy that education concerning alcohol issues
be made part of the University's Wellness Program
and, as such, be integrated into the University's
wellness curriculum. In addition, the University
will rely on such programs as the Alcohol and
Drug Abuse Prevention Team (A.D.A.P.T.) and
the UND Substance Abuse Prevention Program to
increase awareness of issues related to substance
abuse. The University will strive to maintain
standard assessments and indicators of problem
drinking and other related research on campus.
The University will continue to offer special
training for Housing personnel on how to intervene
effectively with students and community members.
The University is asking the Academic Affairs
division to structure class programs on Fridays
in such a way as to discourage binge drinking
on Thursday and Friday evenings; the University
has an obligation to educate students about
potentially life-threatening consequences of
acute alcohol intoxication (alcohol poisoning).
The University calls on student leaders, faculty,
and staff to serve as role models to promote
the message of abstinence by those who are underage
and low-risk alcohol use by those who are of
legal drinking age. |
