Monte Koshel

By Elise Rolandson

“What’s your favorite thing about apple pie?” responds Studio One executive director, Monte Koshel, when asked about his favorite part of helping students produce the Studio One television news show.

Originally from The Pas, Manitoba, Koshel came to the University of North Dakota to pursue a degree in broadcasting.  He graduated in ’93 after two years of interning at Studio One, and became a full-time Television Center employee the next month.  His job entails two distinct parts.  The first is working with UND student interns to produce the television show.  The other part is working on client projects during the shows off-season and during UND holiday breaks.  Koshel enjoys the changing environment from day to day.

Working at the Television Center has given Koshel some memorable moments.  The Grand Forks flood of 1997 found him in waist-high, muddy water as he documented flood damage.  He was even strapped into a helicopter to shoot aerial views of the flood.

Studio One focuses on stories that they feel “need to be told.”  As executive director, Koshel is able to take the stories in the direction that he chooses.  They focus on telling “people” stories that are inspiring and often overlooked.

Studio One began more than 20 years ago in 1987.  More than 600 students have been involved in the program and Studio One has received more than 500 awards in competitions sponsored by professional communication organizations throughout the Midwest.  “It is an absolute pleasure to be a part of that as long as I have,” says Koshel. Among that many qualities he likes about the television show a few are watching the students grow and learn and the great environment that his Studio One team offers.

Outside of UND and the 16 years he has spent at the Television Center, Koshel is an outdoors person and enjoys hunting, fishing, and trapping.  Koshel and his wife also serve as first responders for Fisher, Minn. They became new parents earlier this year, Jillian Koshel was born on January 11, 2009.
