1. What is the Greater Grand Forks Brain Bee?

The Greater Grand Forks Brain Bee is a Q&A competition about neuroscience for high school students. Questions are taken from Brain Facts, a publication of the Society for Neuroscience, and cover topics such as intelligence, memory, emotions, sensations, movement, stress, aging, sleep and brain disorders (such as addiction, Alzheimer's, and stroke).

2. Where is the Brain Bee going to be held?

The Brain Bee will be held at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences. If you need directions, you can find them here.

3. What is the date of the Brain Bee?

The Brain Bee will be held April 23, 2008 at 6:30pm. All participating students must be registered April 15, 2008. You can register online.

4. Will there be prizes given to the winners?

Absolutely! The prizes are as follows:

  • First place wins $125 cash prize and a $30 University Bookstore gift certificate.
  • Second place will receive a $100 cash prize and a $30 University Bookstore gift certificate.
  • Third place will receive a $75 cash prize and a $30 University Bookstore gift certificate.
  • Teachers of the top 3 students will each receive a $100 cash prize to be used in their classroom.

5. How can I obtain a copy of Brain Facts?

Brain Facts is available free of charge at the Society for Neuroscience website. It can be downloaded in .PDF format (PDF Reader available here), or a request for a printed copy can be issued. Please note that a printed copy will require a fee for shipping and handling.

7. What is National Brain Awareness Week?

The Society of Neuroscience says:

"The Brain Awareness Week campaign, launched in 1996, has united the Society for Neuroscience with The Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives and a coalition of over 1,200 science, advocacy, and other health organizations that share an interest in elevating public awareness of brain and nervous system research."
