FTP

FTP stands for "File Transfer Protocol" and makes uploading files to a server as easy as saving files on your computer. To save files to your directory at UND:

  • You should first have received an email from the Computer Center giving you the address and login name of your account. like this:

    Name: "Your Name"
    Login Name: "jjones"
    Directory Name: "instruct/jjones"
    Complete Path: "/www/docs/instruct/jjones"

  • To upload your files and graphics to your directory, run FTP (You can download WS_FTP by going to http://www.ndsu.nodak.edu/its/software_download/index.php. Then you should be able to reach this program by clicking on the "Start" button, then going to "Internet" and "WS_FTP".)
  • Click on "New" and fill in the following information:

    a. Profile name: UND
    b. Host Name: www.und.nodak.edu
    c. Host Type: Automatic Detect
    d. User ID: Login Name (from your Computer Center email)
    e. Password: This should be the password you specified on your "Application for Web Space"

  • Click on "Save", then "OK" (it may ask for your password again, so just re-enter it.
  • You should now be at a screen with two large white boxes on each side with file names in them (the right side will probable have something like ".dt" and "mail" in the top box.)
  • Click on the "ChgDir" button on the right side of the screen. Enter your "Complete Path Name" (/www/docs/instruct/jjones/) and click "Ok"
  • Now click on "ChgDir" on the left side of the screen. Enter the location of your files or graphics (for instance, it would be "a:\" for your floppy drive).
  • Finally, highlight the files you wish to transfer, and click on the right arrow in-between the two lists. This should transfer your files.
