Increasing Your Hits!

Okay, you have a killer web site up with vital information on it. Your only problem is no one is visiting it! You have tried everything from publicizing it on all of the stationary from your office to sending e-mail everyone telling them to check it out. What else can be done?

Luckily, there are several ways to increase traffic to your site. Before they are covered, make sure you understand the four basic terms of Internet searching.

  • Directories - These are lists of pages that are compiled by a person or persons. The most popular index is Yahoo.
  • Search Engine - Interface that allows users to search for information on the Internet.
  • Meta Search Engines - Allows you to search for a topic on more than one engine at a time.
  • Spider or Robot - term describing a program that goes through an entire site and gathers information about the pages. The depth of searching will vary from spider to spider. More information can be found here.

Even before you start submitting your site to the engines, there are steps that you can take to increase your visibility. Be sure to look for other pages on the Internet that could benefit from the information that you have. As you locate them, contact the page owner and ask for a link from their page to yours. Word of mouth is still one of the most effective ways to increase your traffic. Also, if your page is part of a larger web page, inform the system's webmaster to add links to your page and announce the opening of it. For example, as new pages are added to UNDInfo, a link will be placed from the opening page for a week and it will be added to additional areas on the server.
