Courtesy Services

Courtesy Services offers assistance to students experiencing a temporary medical condition or hospitalization.

Community Standards & Care Network offers support to students experiencing temporary medical conditions or who have been hospitalized. Please note that while we strive to provide appropriate services and accommodations, we cannot guarantee availability in all circumstances.

Missing Class

If a student is unable to attend class due to a temporary medical condition, Community Standards & Care Network may notify instructors on the student’s behalf.

Please note that such notifications do not automatically qualify as excused absences and do not supersede the instructor's discretion regarding assignment deadlines or syllabus policies.

In-Class Short-term Accommodations

It is to the discretion of the instructor whether an accommodation is necessary on a case-by-case basis. If a student feels that an accommodation is essential for academic success, the student needs to contact the professor as soon as possible to discuss this.

Accommodations can be, but are not limited to:

  • Extended time on assignments or exams
  • Alternative testing environments (quiet space, reduced distractions)
  • Flexible attendance or participation policies
  • Access to lecture notes, recordings, or alternative formats of materials
  • Modified project requirements or deadlines in consultation with the instructor
  • Opportunities for additional check-ins or support outside of class

Please note that instructors are not mandated to provide disability accommodations unless the condition is identified as a permanent disability.

Temporary Housing Arrangements

Requests for possible temporary housing arrangements for students living in the residence halls, University Place, or University apartments can be made by the Housing & Residence Life Office at housing@UND.edu or 701.777.4255.

Van Service

Students who are unable to use the campus shuttle service may be eligible to use a van service for transportation to and from classes. To request this service, the student must provide written verification from a medical professional addressed to Community Standards & Care Network. The verification must include the following information:

  • Reason for need (e.g., knee surgery)

  • Timeline (expected duration of the need)

  • Mobility aids (e.g., wheelchair, crutches, walker)

Once approved by the Office of Community Standards & Care Network, the student is responsible for scheduling rides directly with the Transportation Department at 701.777.4030.

Van services are available for on-campus transportation only and do not extend off campus. Students who live off campus and require transportation must arrange travel to campus, where the van service will then be available.

Temporary Accessible Parking Permits

Student permit holders may be eligible to obtain a UND accessible permit for two weeks. Once approved by the Community Standards & Care Network Office, the student is responsible for arranging for this temporary permit with the Parking Office at 701.777.3551. There is no cost if the student already has a permit.

Students needing a parking permit due to a temporary disability lasting longer than two weeks should work with their doctor and the North Dakota Department of Motor Vehicles to obtain a temporary disability parking permit.

Planned Hospitalization

If a student is unable to attend class due to a planned hospitalization (e.g., scheduled surgery), they are responsible for notifying Community Standards & Care Network as soon as possible at 701.777.2664. Community Standards & Care Network can provide a courtesy absence notification.

Students are also expected to contact their instructors directly regarding coursework as soon as possible. Please note that this courtesy notification does not constitute an excused absence.

Unexpected Hospitalization

If a student is hospitalized unexpectedly (e.g, car accident), the student or a family member may contact Community Standards and Care Network to complete an absence notification to instructors.

This is not an excused absence, but instead a courtesy provided. Students are still expected to contact their instructors regarding any missed work or classes.

Students requesting accommodations for a permanent disability are expected to register with Student Disability Resources.

Withdrawing from School

If it becomes necessary to withdraw from school, follow these instructions:

  • Before Last Day to Withdraw
  • After Last Day to Withdraw

If you live in UND housing, receive financial aid, or are involved with a special program (e.g., McNair Program, Native American Program, Veteran & Military Services), you should contact the appropriate office to find out how withdrawing may impact your student status.

In all situations, you should contact your academic advisor to determine the impact of withdrawal on your academic status.
