Certificate of Finances
U.S. laws require that universities not only confirm that students are academically eligible to attend, but also that students have sufficient financial support to live and study in the US during their program.
The Form I-20 Certificate of Eligibility is the school certifying that the student is both academically and financially prepared to attend the university. For this reason, anyone wanting to acquire F-1 or M-1 status MUST complete the Certificate of Finances.
The Certificate of Finances form demonstrates the student/sponsor understand what their estimated expenses are, that they have sufficient funds, and are willing to use the funds for the student's education.
Forms
Select the appropriate form to determine the amount of funds UND needs to see in order to create your I-20. No I-20 can be made without the completed Certificate of Finances and supporting bank documentation.
The United States Department of Homeland Security requires each educational institution to obtain evidence of the financial support from each student prior to issuing a Form I-20 or DS-2019. You are responsible for demonstrating sufficient funds to meet all educational and personal expenses for the duration of your F-1 status at the University of North Dakota.
You must certify that you have at least the amount necessary to cover your tuition, fees, and living expenses for the duration of your first year of study. The evidence you provide must be official documents (in English) and all must be less than 6 months old.
Financial Documentation
The following types of financial documentation can be accepted and you may use a combination of resources:
- Bank statement or certificate of balance/certificate of deposit signed by a bank official on official bank letterhead indicating the current balance from yourself, your family or another individual sponsor. Note: Bank documentation must be from a checking, savings, or time deposit account. Brokerage (stock funds), property or real estate, life insurance, jewelry, or any other non-liquid assets are NOT ACCEPTABLE. Also, the type of currency must be clearly indicated on the financial documentation.
- For students who are sponsored by an international organization, government, or institution: A scholarship or sponsorship letter is required, which verifies the amount, source, and length of award.
